Don’t be blind to trash

Heavy load: USM students weighing the rubbish collected along the 800m Pantai Robina stretch and 1.2km stretch of Pantai Bersih.

PENANGITES must develop the habit of picking up rubbish thrown by others as it can go a long way towards ensuring cleanliness of the state.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said in some countries, people did not walk away after seeing rubbish on their path.

“They will pick it up and dispose of it properly. I have seen this in Canada.

“We must strive for each and everyone of us to have that attitude,” he said when opening the state’s International Coastal Cleanup programme at Pantai Robina and Pantai Bersih in Butterworth.

Lim said the ‘Cleaner, Greener Penang’ initiative was aimed at inculcating a sense of responsibility and civic consciousness among the public to keep their surroundings clean.

More than 1,000 participants turned up for the four-hour programme yesterday which was part of the ‘Cleaner, Greener Penang’ initiative co-organised by The Star and the Penang and Seberang Prai municipal councils with support from the state government.

Penang is among more than 100 other countries around the world participating in the international programme.

Among the 2,362kg of rubbish collected at the two beaches were used condoms, underwear and sarong.

Most of the garbage collected in the 800m stretch of Pantai Robina and 1.2km of Pantai Bersih comprised food packaging and plastic water bottles.

Event organising chairman Koay Teng Hai, who is Pulau Tikus assemblyman, said it was possible that the clothing and condoms had drifted to the shore from elsewhere.

“Most of what we collected were food-related items meaning that it’s very likely to be rubbish left by picnickers.

“The ambiance here is nicer than Gurney Drive on Penang island but unfortunately, rubbish is being thrown indiscriminately,” he said.

Among the youngest participants was six-year-old Ng Wei Heng who said he came “to collect rubbish”.

His father Cheng Teik, 47, said they had to wake up at 5am to attend the event.

“Since we are from Bukit Mertajam, I had to wake Wei Heng up early to make it for the 7am programme.

“He was very keen when I told him that we were going to help clean up the beach.

“I believe it’s important to train children from a young age to be conscious of the environment,” the oil company supervisor said.

Friends Ong Kai Li and Ng Hooi Jing cycled from their homes 20 minutes away to join in the gotong-royong.

“It’s our day off but we don’t mind waking up early to show our support for the environment,” Hoo Jing said.

Persatuan Sumber Alam Taman Bagan Lalang chairman Ang Hock Lean, 51, said he came with 16 association members to help.

“The beach here was so beautiful 20 years ago — you could dig for small living creatures. Hopefully, we can make it nice again,” he said.

Clean-up on Butterworth beaches

BUTTERWORTH: Used condoms, underwear and sarong were among the 2,362kg of rubbish collected during the state’s first massive beach clean-up in Seberang Prai at two popular beaches here.

Most of the garbage collected during the four-hour clean-up covering a 800m stretch of Pantai Robina and 1.2km of Pantai Bersih were food packaging and plastic water bottles.

Event organising chairman Koay Teng Hai said it was possible that the clothing and condoms had drifted to the shore from elsewhere.

“Most of what we collected were food-related items meaning that it’s very likely to be rubbish left by picnickers.

“The ambiance here is nicer than Gurney Drive on Penang island but unfortunately, rubbish is being thrown indiscriminately,” he said.

At least 1,000 people turned up for the International Coastal Cleanup programme yesterday.

Penang was among an estimated 100 countries which participated in the international programme.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng launched the event and later the state’s green initiative website (http://greenstate.penang.gov.my).

The programme is part of the “Cleaner, Greener Penang” initiative, co-organised by The Star and the Penang and Seberang Prai municipal councils with support from the state government, to create environmental awareness among the public.

Moon-lit lantern magic

WITH the full moon in sight during a cool and breezy night, it was perfect for a stroll at the scenic Gurney Drive in Penang.

The setting was also ideal for the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration on Wednesday night.

Parents and their children were seen carrying various kind of lanterns.

There were the traditional plastic and paper lanterns with candles in them while some carried modern ones which had blinking LED lighting.

Organised by Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai’s service centre, the event attracted a large crowd who were treated to free food and captivating stage performances.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who graced the event, explained that the festival was a time for family activities whereby tucking in the famous mooncakes can be used as incentives for families to gather together.

“Penang is the place for good food and to have clean, safe and good fun,” he said.

Lim also stressed on the importance of working together to restore the shine back to Penang as the “Pearl of the Orient.”

“We must have integrity in what we do as well as efficiency and productivity. Based on these three qualities — efficiency, productivity and integrity — it will put us on the right track towards turning Penang into an international-status city and destination of choice for investors and tourists alike,” he added.

A fire brigade van worth RM32,000 was also presented to the Pulau Tikus Fire and Rescue volunteer unit.

The vehicle was sponsored by Gurney Drive Tua Pek Kong temple and Gurney Drive Phor Thor committee.

Entertainment for the night included a dragon dance, a lion dance, and a drum performance.

A two-round display of fireworks also decorated the night sky as the gazing crowd stood transfixed.

Song Chia Ying, 33, said she would always bring her two children to have fun at the lantern festival.

“My husband and I also took them to last year’s event at the Esplanade. The children loved picking out their own lanterns,” she said, adding that they usually opted for lanterns with cartoon characters.

However, it was the first time that four-year-old Lee Shun Hao was taking part in such a lantern celebration.

His father, Lee Poh Oon, 32, said his son was clearly having a good time.

Another family was busy taking photographs to capture memorable moments of the festival. Jimmy Yeoh, 39, Celine Neoh, 36, and their two-year-old son Owen went early to avoid getting stuck in the jam.

“We knew about the event and spent time in the Gurney Plaza (shopping mall) before coming here,” said Neoh.

Brent Horrocks, 32, from the United States was there because he was curious to know more about the festival.

An invitation to play

THE children of The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) can now enjoy playtime in their newly set up toy library at the society’s branch in Penang.

The toy library, a brightly-decorated room, looks inviting with shelves filled with soft toys, figurines, toy cars and other educational games.

It was set up under the Toys Stories programme which was co-organised by the Children & Child Heart Clinic and the Mutiara Women Organisation.

They were helped by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the 2 Way Centre and NASOM.

Organising chairman Dr Sim Joo Seng said that play therapy was important for children at the centre.

“As they play with the toys, they learn to interact with other children. This helps them to improve their speech,” he said.

“This is the first toy library set up under the programme. We hope to open up more such libraries with other NGOs on a monthly basis.

“We have networked with other organisations and collected many unwanted toys. We clean up the toys first before giving them to the children to play,” he said.

Dr Sim also hopes to start with a similar project involving books next year.

NASOM Penang branch coordinator R. Genges expressed her happiness over the new library.

“The centre finally has a toy library. Before this, all the toys were scattered about in classrooms.

“We’ll soon come up with a timetable to set aside playtime for the children in the library,” she said.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s wife Betty Chew was present to officiate the opening of the toy library at NASOM Penang recently.

She is also the patron of the Toys Stories project.

NGOs who are interested in setting up toy libraries can contact Dr Sim at 04-658 4058.

Those who wish to donate toys can do so at NASOM, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai’s service centre, the Children & Child Heart Clinic, Montes-sori Children’s House, Penang Downs Syndrome Association, 2 Way Centre, Sim Children & Child Heart Clinic and Gama Supermarket & Departmental Store Sdn Bhd.

Students urged to take online green test

Well done: Lim (centre) sharing a joke with (in school uniform from left) Teoh, Khok and Foo during the NTV7 Mandarin Battle Star prize presentation. Looking on are state Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environmental Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh (left) and Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai (second left).

PRIMARY and secondary school students can test their knowledge on the environment and stand a chance to win mystery prizes by taking part in an online quiz competition.

Held in conjunction with the Penang Government’s ‘Green School’ award programme, the online quiz competition will be held from Thursday to Sept 25.

Organising chairman Koay Teng Hai said students must answer 10 questions in 20 minutes by accessing the website portal of http://greenstate.penang.gov.my.

“They can do so with the help of their family members and teachers during the school holidays.

“We hope the quiz will increase their awareness to create a cleaner, greener Penang,” he told a press conference on Friday.

Koay said the first 100 participants who successfully answer the questions correctly in the shortest time period would be given mystery gifts.

“They will also stand a chance to participate in a green camp organised by the state government during the end of the year school holidays in November,” Koay said.

Those interested can contact 04-6505112 or thingsiewshuen@penang.gov.my for details.

International Coastal Cleanup

Beach to be swept clean

Raring to go: Koay (fourth left) and committee members showing a banner during a press conference at Taman Robina in Butterworth, Penang, yesterday.

ABOUT 2,000 people are expected to take part in the International Coastal Cleanup programme at Taman Robina and Pantai Bersih in Butterworth, Penang, on Saturday.

The campaign is part of the ‘Cleaner, Greener Penang’ initiative co-organised by The Star and the Penang and Seberang Prai municipal councils with support from the state government.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will launch the event at Pantai Robina, Bagan Ajam, at 6.30am. It involves cleaning up a 3km stretch of the beach between Taman Robina and Pantai Bersih.

Event organising chairman Koay Teng Hai said the rubbish found in the sea was mainly discarded into it directly or thrown into rivers and carried there.

He also said some of the garbage had entered Malaysian waters from neighbouring nations.

“Based on my observation, about 130 bags of rubbish from neighbouring countries can be collected in seven days,” Koay, who is also Pulau Tikus assemblyman, told a press conference yesterday.

He said apart from the programme, other government agencies would also take part in the programme, including the Election Commission (to register new voters), National Association for Drug Prevention Malaysia (Pemadam) as well as the state health and welfare departments.

Nokia’s South-East Asia and Pacific sustainability manager Tan Mei Ling, whose company is also taking part in the campaign, said they would continue their role to help create public awareness and encourage the people to embrace a greener lifestyle.

She said they would conduct a roadshow during the event to educate the public on the benefits of e-waste recycling, including recycling of old mobile phones and accessories.

Tan said a mobile recycling truck would be at the site for the public to bring along their unwanted cellular phones of any brand to be recycled.

“They will then get a chance to take part in a contest to guess the nearest all-correct number of old handphones in a box and stand to win a brand new Nokia mobile phone,” she said.

The public can also try their luck at a ‘Spin the Wheel’ where they stand to win Eco premiums from Nokia for every old phone recycled.

Such gifts include T-shirts, pen drives made from bamboo, pencils made from old newspapers, recycled notebooks and recycling bags and caps made from recycled bottles and packaging materials.

More single women seeking love

WOMEN outnumbered the men at a matchmaking event which was held in Penang for the third year.

Seventy-five women and 45 males were looking for life partners in the ‘Cupid 4 Love 2010’ event organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Bayan at a hotel on Saturday.

The participants, with ages raging from 23 to 45, were initially shy when the masters of ceremony led them through an ice-breaking session called the ‘Cupid Roar’ where they had to shout out letters from the word ‘Cupid’.

The participants were later divided into groups for another game called ‘Seek and Find’ where each group had to gather items listed on a paper.

Members of the group who finished the task first were immediately given a prize each.

The participants then took part in a ‘speed dating’ session where a male and female were seated in front of each other.

They were given five minutes to get to know each other.

The programme, which started at noon ended at 11pm after a gala dinner.

In between, there were interactive and relationship building activities.

The guest-of-honour at the event, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai, earlier wished the participants “happy hunting” in his opening speech.

Programme founder Edmand Tan Kah Yeow said they had paired up more than 20 couples since the launch of the programme.

“One couple tied the knot last year and another this year,” he said.

He said the programme was open to single women aged between 21 and 45 and single men aged between 21 and 48.

“We have about 10 participants who are taking part in the programme for the third year. They are still looking for their right partners and find the programme interesting,” he said.

He said about 120 participants took part in last year’s event and about 100 in the first year.

2,000 to take part in beach cleanup

PUT on your gloves, pick up a garbage bag and be among half a million of the world’s population in removing trash from beaches and coastal areas in Penang next month.

The Penang Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment office will organise a cleanup campaign in Butterworth on Sept 25 to coincide with the 25th International Coastal Cleanup.

Organising chairman Koay Teng Hai said the cleanup would cover the 1.2km stretch of Pantai Bersih and 800m of Pantai Robina.

“Through this campaign, we hope to raise public awareness on beach cleanliness and the responsibility to make Penang a cleaner place.

“We invite the corporate sectors, schools, colleges and individuals to join this programme in making Penang an international city,” he said.

About 2,000 participants are expected to take part in the event from 6.30am to 11am.

Universiti Sains Malaysia will compile data on the source and movement of the rubbish collected and the reports will be submitted to the Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit environmental advocacy organisation that promotes healthy ocean ecosystems.

Participants are encouraged to bring along their own water bottles or containers because clean water will be supplied while breakfast and snacks are also provided.

The event is part of the ‘Cleaner, Greener Penang’ one-year initiative, which is co-organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd, Penang Municipal Council and Seberang Prai Municipal Council with support from the state government.

Registration can be done via SMS or e-mail. You can also download the registration forms from the website, www.penang.gov.my (under the Announcement section).
